Dear POV Friends,
In 1988, Marc Weiss envisioned a documentary film series that would challenge the notion of television as a one-way medium, one that could inform and engage audiences with unique content and diverse perspectives to maximize television's potential. 25 years later, after broadcasting over 365 films POV remains committed to supporting and presenting the very best independent documentaries — for free. But, to do that we need your help and we are asking you to donate today and help us make the next 25 years even better.
Beyond broadcast, our small team works tirelessly to bring POV films to audiences nationwide. In the last year alone, we coordinated over 600 free film screenings across the country, we supported independent filmmakers through press coverage reaching millions, and POV made over 60 films available for free streaming online. Filmmaker Theo Rigby (Sin País) sums it up nicely:
"As a first time filmmaker, having my film broadcast on POV has been a joy and a privilege. Even though my film Sin País is a short film, the team at POV saw the potential for the piece to add to the national dialogue concerning immigration, and created an amazing discussion guide and ancillary materials to accompany the film. Today, hundreds of educators across the country are using the POV-created materials and the film continues to circulate in communities around the country long after the national broadcast. With an increasingly difficult funding and broadcasting paradigm for documentary filmmakers, POV stands out as a beacon for creative films that push the boundaries of traditional documentary film."
As we head into 2013, we will continue to increase our involvement with the community. We will work with web developers and filmmakers at POV Hackathons to explore the intersection of nonfiction storytelling with digital tools. We will also expand our POV Premiere Parties, inviting viewers to host friends to discuss the issues presented in POV films and encouraging an engaged civic conversation.
