Introduction

In 2002, with support from the Houston Endowment, POV launched a national community engagement campaign around the broadcast of Señorita Extraviada to stimulate a national consciousness on U.S.-Mexico border issues, highlighting the rich confluence of cultures as well as the unique responsibilities that we have toward one another as neighbors.

A winner at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, Lourdes Portillo's Señorita Extraviada is a haunting investigation into an unspeakable crime wave amid the disorders and corruption of one of the biggest border towns in the world. Between 200-400 girls have been murdered in Juárez, Mexico, where authorities ignore pleas for justice from the victims' families, the crimes go unpunished, and evidence of government complicity remains uninvestigated as the killings continue to this day.

Through extensive community outreach, an aggressive press and promotion campaign, and unique website activities, the film generated over 40 events across the country to engage people in discussions about the integral and intracultural links between America and Mexico.
