Education Manager

Reports to: Vice President of Impact and Engagement Strategy

Start Date: October 2019

Job Description:

The Education Manager executes on long-term strategies and tactics for positioning documentaries to advance student, classroom and institutional learning. This person will partner with writers, educators, and school districts to expand the reach of films and build media literacy and learning for students and viewers. The organization is open to this being a remote position with designated times to be in office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


- Manage and monitor education strategy and goals for AmDoc films

- Direct the educational arm of national outreach and partnership development for both film-specific campaigns and other organizational initiatives

- Supervise department contractors and engage key stakeholders in the production of companion materials including discussion guides, lesson plans, and reading lists

- Grow the POV Community Network with educational institutions, school principals, professors, and teacher leaders

- Oversee and develop afterschool film initiative and program logistics

- Develop and maintain professional development experiences and communities-of-practice for teachers

- Manage submissions and provide representation at documentary impact, media literacy and education conferences/exhibitions to assure high visibility for POV Engage throughout the industry

- Implement creative, bold, and innovative thinking for educator efforts surrounding the series, while staying abreast of new approaches, trends, and resources effectively used in the classroom

Library Engagement

- Engage and maintain existing POV Library Board, including film reading list management and budget

- Develop and diversify new library partnerships to enhance reading lists and increase community screening events

- Actively seek out constituent feedback and implement as appropriate

Strategic Partnerships

- Works with staff and volunteers to develop American Documentary’s national presence by strengthening visibility and awareness of American Documentary’s Brand, including planning and implementing a robust, innovative engagement strategy with activities that emphasize media literacy, community discourse and action

- Engages schools, school districts, and youth-focused organizations and maintains visible and effective partnerships dealing with media literacy

- Makes presentations at workshops, forums and conferences, as appropriate

- Uses data-driven analytics and tools to target audiences and track results

- Provide educational highlights including pictures, data, and stories to the External Affairs department to amplify coverage and recognition of student learning


- Edit lesson plans, reading lists, discussion guides, user-created content, and educational resources

- Ensure proper representation of educational materials on/in AmDoc website, POV Community Network and PBS Learning Media

Supervisor Responsibilities

- Hire and manage assigned writers, contractors, volunteers and interns; develop related budgets

- Set goals for consultant performance and deadlines; evaluate

- Organize workflow and ensure that education consultants understand their duties and delegated tasks

Additional Responsibilities

- Utilize AmDoc’s strategic plan as a guide to set quarterly and annual goals

- Collaborate with the communications team to promote the content, value, and vision of American Documentary

- Advise America ReFramed on opportunities for partnerships with educational organizations

- Work across the organization on national partnership development and audience engagement strategy

Fundraising Support

  • Support related grant writing/fundraising including updates and budgets with External Affairs team
  • Present at funder meetings


- Required travel to educational conferences, professional development meetings, community media centers and school events

- If remote, coordinated travel to work in AmDoc office at designated time

Other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

- At least 3-5 years of classroom teaching experience

- Awareness of national trends in education with experience in implementing best practices

- Bachelor’s degree in related field

- Experience leading teacher professional development and/or presenting at national, education conferences

- Strong interest in social justice, public media, and nonprofit administration

- Desire to work in a collaborative environment as well as managerial experience

- Detail-oriented, with demonstrated success in utilizing digital project management tools

- Demonstrated communication skills, including excellent listening/written/verbal skills

- Enthusiastic, flexible team player who has the willingness to learn

- Organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks

- Ability to research, synthesize and provide information for use in presentations

- Experience working with school district leaders, afterschool programs, and libraries is a plus
